Women are criticized for their bodies consistently. If a girl wears too much makeup she’s a whore. If a girl is a little chubby than she is fat. If a girl is too skinny than she is anorexic. Only a handful of bodies are deemed as “perfect” which causes body dysmorphia in young girls. They believe their bodies are flawed and have to be fixed or covered up in order to fit in. Body dysmorphia is a serious problem with teenage girls, however what about teenage boys? Why does no one discuss the effects of negative MALE body image?
Young boys are prohibited in discussing their insecurities which has a negative effect on their mental health. Masculine stereotypes dictate that boys should be strong and muscular and able to handle anything. Movies like 300 have put more pressure on men to maintain an impossible standard of masculine beauty. Anorexia exists in men just as much as women, and men will take supplements or steroids in order to accomplish their fitness goals. I can understand the use of these products to a point but the abuse of any substance in order to conform is wrong.
Men are valued for their bodies just as much as women. Their ability to provide and protect their families is based on their physical strength because men who aren’t strong are seen as incapable. Most women dream of having their man pick them up and carry them into their future house. Why is this the case?
Why is there a demand on physical strength but not mental strength? Isn’t it more important to be healthy than a bodybuilder. It is more important to be mentally strong and capable so you are able to objectively see your goals and work toward them. Don’t let society dictate how you should look. Be confident and strong but don’t be stupid. Who cares what others think of you. Fuck them! Every body is different and by recognizing how negative body image affects people you have the ability to stop the negative impact. Understand what it means to be healthy not skinny or “ripped.” Do not criticize others but try to understand them. Never prejudge someone negatively because they don’t conform to an unrealistic ideal. Be proud of who you are and be healthy. That’s all you need to do and that’s all there needs to be.
